The name is derived from Latin (balneum) which was originally referred to the presence of springs with water troughs, baptismal font or clothes washing areas. In the first half of the 20th century this public place was called “Baths of Villaga” by those who came to bathe in some of the pools traversed by hot spring water at 27-28 degrees, even in winter. Today the small booths are closed and the long outside sink is not in use, but the hot water continues to flow.
